Succulent Garden Gift

On a recent trip to South Africa, I found myself invited to an engagement party for two VERY special people.  I needed their gift to be thoughtful and appropriate to them.  Two outdoorsie types who were just about to move into their first home together.

I'm a huge fan of succulents as they've proved rather difficult to kill.  I have very un-green fingers so need the most hardcore plants I can find.  My mom is the same which is why when I made her bookshelf garden I used the same kind of rough and tough plants.

The bookshelf garden was a hit so I used it as inspiration for this succulent crate.  The crate was from Mr Price Home and the succulents and soil/stones etc came from the Dunrobin Nursery in Kloof.

Because the crate is not waterproof I lined the bottom with a thick black plastic and then used a special black fabric (sorry I cant remember its name) to line the sides so the soil can't fall through.  I then put small stones at the bottom so the water could drain.  This was all advice from my mom's super green fingered friend, I'm not that clever!

And this, dear people, is the result.  And I'm pleased to report that the happy couple gave it the thumbs up!
